Look outside yourself: Ways to discover your values by looking at the world beyond

Discovering your values is a journey that is unique to you. We have looked at ways to learn more about ourselves by looking inward. Here, we will look at many ways you can look outward to learn more about what matters to you. First, consider who your role models are. What values do they embody, and which one resonates with you? Perhaps you look up to your dad because of his sense of responsibility. Or maybe you think highly of a public figure because of their sense of justice and kindness. Take a look at the people you deeply respect. Chances are, they exemplify the values you regard highly. You can also ask other people what they think your values are. Sometimes, we get so caught up in our world that our actions become invisible to ourselves. We continue our habits without thinking about them. Talking to a close friend or relative may shine a new light on your outer persona. Perhaps people view you as thrifty. Or maybe they view you as kind. Is that one of your values? Finally, you can take on new experiences to broaden your horizon. You will not know how much you appreciate music if you don't try listening to them. By going outside your comfort zone, you will be able to learn new things about yourself. You will come to discover that you like certain things and dislike others. Remember, discovering your values can take a lot of effort. By looking outward, you can learn about what matters to you from a different angle. Remember to stay open-minded, patient, and proactive. And know that this whole process is worth it.
