Gratitude is a habit everyone can develop. Indeed, there are many techniques we can use to feel more grateful. Two of them are negative visualization and downward comparison.
Gratitude is so much more than thinking positive thoughts. Unlike naive positive thinking, gratitude enables us to embrace all the good without ignoring the bad. We often feel gratitude most vividly when we receive goodness amidst our suffering. Bad experiences teach us not to take things for granted. In negative visualization, we imagine bad things that could happen to us. For example, what would happen if we lost our wallet? What would we do if our friend left us? Doing this will help you feel more appreciative of the things you have right now. By imagining the bad, you can feel the good more clearly.
We like to compare ourselves to other people. When we focus on the good things happening to others, our happiness can be affected negatively. The good things in others highlight what we are lacking. However, when we see others struggle with difficulties, we become more aware of the good things happening to us. We learn to no longer take the good things we have for granted. As a result, we become more grateful for what we currently have. Try doing a downward comparison. It may feel awkward at first, but notice how other people are struggling in their lives. That will hopefully give you a renewed perspective on the good things in your life.
